CONFIDENCE: The Game Changer

By Alexis Thompson

In both the spotlight of pageantry and in everyday life, self-confidence reigns supreme. I’m

Alexis Elle Thompson, a 16-year-old, and two-time national title winner at Princess of America Pageant. My journey to the crown hasn’t been all glitz and glamor, though. In 2018, a diagnosis of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis led to two years in a plastic torso brace, and ultimately major spine surgery in 2020. Throughout my journey, I’ve come to understand the profound impact of self-love and hard work. These attributes are not just personal treasures, but powerful instruments of change. I’ve found that embracing ourselves and our worth is a revolutionary act, inspiring the challenge of societal norms and the expectations that hold us back. While the concept sounds simple, it’s far from easy. Here are my best tips for transforming uncertainty into powerful momentum:

Take Opportunities in Stride

Approaching opportunities with an open mind and adaptability paves the way for personal and professional growth. Opportunities often come unannounced and may not always align with previously laid-out plans, however, each opportunity carries the potential for valuable

experiences and lessons. Navigating life’s unpredictability with grace and flexibility opens us up to possibilities never thought possible!

Speak Out

In 2020, I founded EmBrace You, an organization to benefit scoliosis patients like me. This

endeavor, which started as a personal passion, grew into a nationwide initiative. It’s easy to shy away from standing our ground and being assertive about the things we believe in. However, opinions are the building blocks of our identity, reflecting our values, experiences, and perspectives. Ensuring our voices are heard fosters self-confidence, empowerment, and shapes the world around us! It is through the collective expression of our beliefs that societies evolve and strive toward positive change.

Be YOURSELF

While it may seem cliché, being yourself is a vital step toward personal growth. Going through life with genuine purpose and sincerity allows us to build honest connections and live a more fulfilling life. If we spend too much time worrying about the opinions of others, we lose sight of our goals. Authenticity trumps external validation any day of the week!

Confidence is an absolute game-changer. If you believe in yourself, chances are others will as well! So, the next time you step into a board meeting at work, meet someone new, or just need a pick-me-up, remember who you are and the things that make you unique. Remember, confidence is not about being flawless; it’s about loving your imperfections and owning your story with pride. Embrace your strengths, acknowledge your achievements, and trust in your capabilities. You’ve got this!
